The Story of a Sequel

In 2011, the Friends of the Rochester Public Market conceived the first Market Cookbook to financially support the Market Token program. Because market vendors can’t process electronic payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the token program allows customers to purchase wooden tokens which they can use like money. Market vendors can then redeem the tokens at face value. It’s a simple, but powerful concept.

Our token program is the largest in the country, selling over two million dollars in tokens since 2008, and enabling SNAP customers to purchase affordable fresh, local foods. Three quarters of them report eating more fruits and veggies and shopping at the Market more frequently as a result of the tokens. That’s positive all around.

The first cookbook was an enormous success, selling nearly 6,000 copies and providing a great boost to the program. This year, we were excited to repeat that success. But this time, we wanted a different feel, a different spin.

Our market is open and hopping 52 weeks a year, and we wanted to highlight how the produce changes through the seasons. So, the cookbook is organized by season, with recipes focusing on what’s fresh and wonderful in each. And of course it also features the meats, cheeses, spices, and pantry items you can get year round from our fabulous vendors.

So when you purchase this cookbook, know that you’re helping ensure that everyone in our community has access to the Market’s bounty of fresh and healthy foods.

Eat Well. Do Good.
