The Friends of the Rochester Public Market are offering a 50 percent discount on reusable blue bags sold at the Rochester Public Market in March to help shoppers and vendors adjust to New York’s plastic bag ban.

The New York State Bag Waste Reduction Law takes effect March 1 and prohibits retailers from distributing plastic carryout bags that are not exempt.

The Friends of the Rochester Public Market will sell reusable blue bags for $1 throughout March. The bags will be available in Shed B from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday in March, or at the Token Center anytime the Public Market is open. In addition to the discounted tote bags, insulated zipper tote bags and heavyweight canvas totes will also be available for sale. All proceeds will support programs run by the Friends of the Rochester Public Market.

Exempt bags include those that are:

  • Used solely to contain or wrap uncooked meat, fish, seafood, poultry, or other unwrapped food, flower, or plant item;

  • Used by a customer solely to package items from bulk containers, including fruits, vegetables, grains, candy, small hardware items (such as nuts, bolts, and screws), live fish, or live insects;

  • Used solely to contain food sliced or prepared to order.

More information about the state’s plastic bag ban can be found at the Department of Environmental Conservation’s website.
